Art Show - We Are Also You: Avatar Project

All ages - join the artists for a collective viewing of the We Are Also You Avatar Project (WAAUYAP) exhibit on display in the upper galleries of the Lafayette Library from Oct. 8-Nov. 16.

Interested in learning more about the vision of the WAAUYAP? Adults and teens are also invited to join us at 3pm in our lower level Meeting Room for a poetry reading by Lafayette Poet Laureate ZBassSpeaks, and local equal rights activist Frank Archuleta.

About the WAAYAP

The We Are Also You Avatar Project (WAAYAP) is supported by a Public Art Grant from the Public Art Committee.

The intent of the WAAYAP is to reach the entire community, with a special focus on hearing from our underrepresented communities, and to celebrate our diversity. We do want to hear from everyone because, we believe that by sharing our personal stories, we have a better chance to see and understand each other, and that each of us shares a personal story, rooted in hope and loss, that has shaped our identity.

The Exhibit - We Are Also You: Avatar Project
Along with the work from our community, the exhibit features the work of four Lafayette artists who are creating an installation of 2D and 3D works to share parts of their personal stories. When we witness each other's stories, we connect to the fundamental human experience. The show runs Oct. 8-Nov. 16 in the upper galleries (2nd floor) of the Lafayette Library.

Call for Participation
The project invites members of the community of all ages to create an avatar, which can be understood as a visual representation of invisible aspects of ourselves. There are no restrictions on the medium or content - only a prompt to consider sharing an experience of hope, loss, and identity.

  • Participants receive "window sheets" - sheets of paper with three pencil-drawn boxes. Write a story from your life, a poem, or create a collage, draw a picture, paint a painting - whatever inspires you to share a part of your life.
  • Participants earn a chance to win one of two $50 prizes!
  • Pick up blank window sheets at the Library starting Sept. 2, and drop them off between Oct. 8-Nov. 10.
  • You may also choose to create your work at the Library - you will have access to colored pencils, markers, pens, and decorative colored papers. You can also take some of these materials home to work on them there as well, while supplies last!
