Lafayette Learns: History of the Ampersand
Adults - Lafayette Learns welcomes the Book Arts League for "& - The Surprising History of the 27th Letter," featuring Louisville resident and typeface designer Steve Matteson.
This talk introduces the origins of the ampersand ("and" symbol) and beautifully illustrates the progression of its shape from scribal calligraphy to metal printing type and now font software. Recognizable as “and” in a seemingly infinite variety of forms the ampersand has beguiled readers and designers for over 2,000 years.
